Cardle Tour—Colin and Nancy Carson—October 12, 2024
On a truly beautiful fall day, eight teams made up of 16 road warriors sallied forth to confront the clues, resolve the riddles, decode the encryptions and … generally have a lot of fun figuring out mystery words by combining their favourite cars, sharp eyes and enquiring minds to find and fathom mystery words for points.
In the eight hours between crossing the start line and arriving at the finish line, many of the teams managed to visit the majority of the 20 cardle locations, covering an average distance of 345 kms and solving many of the mystery word puzzles – the cardles that comprised the game.
As I promised, no one was able to get to all 20 of the cardle locations, nor was anyone able to solve every one of the cardles they got to. However, each one of the cardles was solved by one or more of the teams. So, there were no complaints about the game being "too hard". Similarly, no one claimed it was "too easy".
Apart from simple enjoyment, one of my main objectives was to introduce the game players to cultural and historic treasures hiding in plain sight along the highways and byways of Eastern Ontario. By all accounts, the day was a big success on that score as many of the players talked about wanting to revisit places previously unknown to them.
One significant shortfall today was our Start Line hospitality. I promised fresh treats from Cumberland’s Black Walnut Bakery but, despite Nancy going to the bakery well ahead of their opening time, she still found herself at the end of a very long line of impatient customers. Clearly, the secret of the BWB is ‘out’. Anyway, she had no choice but to race home with a selection of convenience store pastries for the players to munch with their coffee while they poured over the game instructions package they were handed when they arrived.
Finally, Nancy and I, along with the other Cardle players, want to extend our joyful congratulations to team "Red Rockets" – STEVE and LEAH LEU … the 2024 Cardle Champions!
